Arcana Apartments
Oakland Park, Florida
1972
This was a speculative ten unit condo apartment project. It was intended to be an attractive and inexpensive alternative for singles and young couples. I had two partners who were both past clients. One owned a real estate company and the other owned Structural Roof Systems, heavy timber specialists.
The units were two stories with the upper level set back from the front, creating a two story section of the living room. A half circle domed skylight would bring sunlight into both the living and bedroom spaces. An entry garden walkway accessed all units, which had excellent privacy from the garden, and each had a fenced private patio. The roof and the second floor were heavy timber beams and decking.
Financing killed the venture as the apartments were considered too small and unorthodox, and the timing was probably premature.
