Culbreath House
Lutz, Florida
1972
The clients were a young couple with two daughters. The site for the house was set in a cluster of Live Oaks, surrounded by an Orange grove and 100 feet from a Cypress tree lined lake.
The structure was wood, but the heavy timber beams were set on main bearing lines, with long spans of decking, which required 3" or 4" thick wood deck, depending on the spans. Lower walls were block and stucco, upper frame walls and roof fascias were Cedar lapped boards. Glass frames were eliminated to blur indoor/outdoor distinction as much as possible. Two great Live Oaks hovered over the Living Room which featured two all glass corners, mitered on two sides and top. Several half-sphere white Plexiglas skylights contribute daylight where needed.
