Mabry House
Chattanooga, Tennessee
1968
Mabry, a general contractor, was originally involved in the 1963 Continental Inns of America prefab motel prototype project in Chattanooga, a portion of which became his office. Some years later he reappeared as a house client and specifically requested a "round" house for his family. The lot was in a typical moderate income neighborhood and the house became a very conspicuous addition thereto.
Heavy timber with wood poles were exposed inside and out with drywall ceilings on wood joists between beams. The dectagon was the geometric choice for the plan as the ten segments worked well for the room functions together with a sunken Living Room in the center.
The Entrance became a painted celebration of the circle.
