McCreary Cliff House
Found Forest, Cashiers, North Carolina
2007
The client owns a 2 ½ acre parcel of land that is severed by a cluster of steep rock cliffs and has a dramatic rocky creek over which the entry driveway passes. The house site is up a hill, on the edge of the cliff, and overlooks a magnificent panoramic view of Whiteside Mountain and the valley below.
Several windswept Oak trees occupy the site, so the master bedroom suite is separated from the main living area to accommodate the Oaks and is connected by an enclosed bridge. The Great Room is defined by a hip roof with a central skylight structure and two guest bedrooms and a carport are on a level below. Materials are stone and Cedar shingles.
The economy has slowed progress, but the client has continued to work on the site, has built the driveway across the creek and up to the house site and installed a specially engineered septic system, due to the rocky site.
