Scott House
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
2008
The clients envisioned something similar to a Florida Keys house, but a more organic modern version. They were boating enthusiasts and were well aware of the negative aspects of water, especially in a hurricane. They wanted all their main living spaces to be on the second floor……living/dining/laundry/master suite/covered screened porch. That would also afford more privacy from neighbors and be better positioned to capture the prevailing southeast breeze. The lower floor contains two guest bedrooms, office, three car garage and boat storage/work shop. The entry foyer is a half level above the guest parking so that when entering the front door you are half way between two floors.
The exterior walls are split face concrete block and the upper level walls are horizontal lapped Cedar siding. Interior ceilings follow the exterior roof shapes and are surrounded by soffit/light coves. The clients were not fond of air conditioning so all rooms have ceiling fans, and when all the doors are opened to the screened porch which is the southeast corner it becomes as one big breezy space.
Landscaping is intentionally full and tropical for shading and privacy.
