WILDFLOWER
Boca Raton, Florida
1978
Wildflower was primarily a bar that served food and was located next to a bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway. Boca Raton had a much cherished history and tradition based upon the architectural style of the famous architect Addison Mizner. Wildflower was an abstract nod to local tradition.
The structure is all poured concrete with stucco surface. The plan is based on the equilateral triangle with all 30 and 60 degree angles. A column in the center of the main hexagon bar supported six radiating beams at the second floor level which allowed a mezzanine to meander through the two story high space, and a hexagonal dance floor reflected the shape of the bar below.
The band stand was originally designed as an elevator that would slowly move as it played to both levels, but approvals became too cumbersome and it was fixed in between.
The windows on the front side were stained glass "wildflowers".
