William's Island Club
William's Island, Aventura, Florida
1983
William's Island was an extended, multi-year involvement, resulting in numerous preliminary schemes and endless meetings before we actually built anything. We were there at the beginning, presumably because of our successful hospitality experience. All of the residential high-rises, low rises and townhomes were done by other architects.
The first project that was built was their Sales Center and included a full model apartment, a segment of high-rise floor plan. It was quickly and poorly done, and significantly compromised, so I pretty much disowned it.
The site for the Club was a small island surrounded by a small bay, in fact William's Island itself was a large island. We were to spend the best part of a year, working on different concepts, on one of which, a much larger and complex version, compete working drawings were done, then aborted.
A much simplified design was finally settled on, which was on a single level and surrounded by repetitive arches, a nod to the Mediterranean environment. The enclosing structure was all heavy timber with a large skylight centering the dining room.
The bar/lounge/entertainment area opened out to a cocktail terrace overlooking the swimming pool. Water not only surrounded the Club but was ever present as ponds, fountains, waterfalls and bridges. It was also lushly landscaped by the landscape architect who beautifully did the whole project.
We also designed the covered access bridge and arrival building on the land side, and later remodeled the lounge and added a private dining/wine room.
