Doran House

Delray Beach, Florida

1967

The site was a corner waterfront lot on the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway. The clients, originally from New England, requested a Florida version of a rustic New England country cottage.
I translated that into "cozy" and "quaint" but seemingly conversely "open" and "airy". Hence all of the basic structure, 2"x stud walls, 2"x roof rafters and exterior sheathing plywood (including anchor straps, bolts & electrical conduits) were left exposed as the finished interior. Scale was also kept extra comfortable.
In response to the subtropical location, wide overhangs at Living Room glass areas and additional redwood jalousies at Bedrooms were appropriate.
