Karlson House

Lighthouse Point, Florida

1961

The client was a young, recently married dentist, and owned a lot on the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway which looked east out the Hillsboro Inlet to the Atlantic Ocean. As he was an avid fisherman, the location was as appropriate and convenient as it could get.
The living/dining/entry area is defined by a 45 degree sloping gable roof with a flat roof screened porch at the low end. The Kitchen, Utility and two bedrooms are angled 45 degrees from the Living Room, as well as the Master Bedroom above, which is opened to the living space below and to a large roof deck overlooking the inlet and ocean.
Exposed block and vertical Cypress siding are the main materials with the second floor defined by a dominant horizontal band of plywood and battens.
